Here’s the third selection of advanced language learning materials for attendees of New Year, New Language 2024. If you missed the first two, here there are again:
Advanced Language Learning: One
Advanced Language Learning: Two
Mastery and Advanced Level Language Learning
I was delighted to be invited to be a guest on The Fluent Show, one of the leading language learner podcasts, hosted by the wonderful Kerstin Cable. In this episode, fellow guest Tristan Foy and I speak with Kerstin. The topic, as it happens was “Mastery and Advanced Language Learning”. Enjoy!
Terrific Technique Three: shadowing
Shadowing (speaking along simultaneously with a recording) is a really useful supplementary technique that can help improve your accent and intonation and also help you consolidate useful “chunks” of language (so that you remember them together and your speaking flows more). I’ve linked to a popular post I wrote that tells you how to do it.

The ultimate language exam?
The elusive Russian TRKI (Certificate of Russian as a Foreign Language) Fourth Certificate (C2) is one of the most challenging proficiency exams out there. You may not be studying advanced Russian but you’ll be inspired and have takeaways from my series of five interviews with people who’ve passed the Fourth Certificate. Here are links to the first and the most recent two in the series (others linked via these posts):
This top Russian exam really does exist and CAN be passed (interview with Daria)
TRKI Fourth Certificate: the fullest candidate interview yet (interview with Raffi)
Recommended courses for upper intermediate / advanced
Luca Lampariello’s Become a Master Language Learner (Level 2) “Overcoming the Intermediate Plateau” is my top recommended general methods training course.
Olly Richard’s “Uncovered” upper intermediate courses are a great launchpad for the journey to advanced. Available in a range of popular languages. The golden thread running through each course is an enticing story, which keeps you engaged from unit to unit and helps you to absorb the language without realising it. He calls it “StoryLearning”. Here are the links to the courses:
=> Spanish Uncovered (Intermediate)
=> German Uncovered (Intermediate)
=> French Uncovered (Intermediate)
=> Italian Uncovered (Intermediate)
=> Japanese Uncovered (Intermediate)
I’m proud to partner with Luca and Olly and if you sign up for one of their courses using my link, a small commission will help my work here at Howtogetfluent.com (at no extra cost to you).
That was the final set of advanced resources. Hope you enjoyed them and check out the full list of articles here: blog archive.
