Hey Gareth :D
I was one of the volunteers at the conference. I love your article!
Something that I want to say: Thessaloniki is a known city for its religious-ness- hence everywhere churches and..people who visit them, and its russian-ness. Russian businessmen make investments in that area, because of the sea and the religious-ness mentioned above (let's not forget, Thessaloniki is very close to Aghion Oros- a sacred place for orthodox christians, sadly only men are allowed to enter)
But most importantly, after the USSR fell, a lot of Pontic Greeks who resided there decided to head to Greece- many of them settled in cities with strong pontic communities, like Thessaloniki. So, the russian element is stronger there due to the russian pontic greeks (we call them ρωσοπόντιοι, although sometimes this is a negative term). A famous one is Ivan Savvidis, who owns the most important football team of the city, PAOK.
That for the history.
Im glad you enjoyed your stay!
