In reply to Jo Galbraith. It's an amazing language, Jo. I did monthly updates during the first year. Now I'm just doing a blog post update every few months but I'm still putting a lot into the lang, esp. listening practice. It's slow but I'm making progress. Well worth a go at some stage!

Thank you Gareth, this is very interesting and helpful, as I’ve been harbouring an enthusiasm to begin Japanese sometime. I need to learn Italian more proficiently first. Reason for Japanese, because it interested me in pre internet days and I tried and failed to learn from a textbook. Secondly, I would like to climb Mount Fuji.

In reply to Elizabeth. ありがとうございました for the comments, Elizabeth. Several people I know are trying Drops for other lagnauges. I haven't got Genki I but I though of having a look at it. Keep me posted on how you do. I'm really enjoying Japanese at the moment but it's still very early days, of course. I will start on the kanji as soon as I've done the katakana (I've just about finished the hiragana using Heisig's Kana book, which works really well. I may do some Goldlisting as well. Are you already using kanji for Goldlisting?

Hi Gareth!
It seems we have parallel projects. 🙂 I just started serious study of Japanese a couple months ago to prepare for a trip to Japan in October. I also have the long term goal of learning the language beyond travel purposes. I’m using Drops app and Goldlisting for vocabulary, Pimsleur for listening, and the texts JFZ and Genki for grammar reference. And I’m also using the Heisig book for kanji. Of course you know many experienced language learners, but if you ever want to commiserate with another learner at roughly the same level, feel free to get in touch. The Japanese language is both thrilling and frustrating. Ganbatte kudasai! (Good luck on your endeavors.)
